Scott Daniel Strickstein is an artist and designer splitting time between his home in the jungle of Costa Rica, and the concrete jungle of New York. Strickstein is the founder and lead designer at Scott Daniel Design, a Brooklyn based studio devoted to sculptural lighting and furniture. 

He is the creator of Cmesh, a ceramic-coated metal mesh that can be draped, folded, and sculpted, yet remains perforated to diffuse light. Guided by a fascination with sensual, tactile materials, and inspired by ideas from alchemy, Strickstein’s work balances organic imperfection with mechanical precision. 

The pursuit to find this balance is echoed by time spent in the city that never sleeps, and the sunrise to sunset lifestyle of a tropical beach town. The abundance of nature's energy in Costa Rica fuels inspiration, and the “get things done” vibe of New York provides the talent and resources to realize ambitious designs. A firm belief in the theory of Yin Yang influences most of Scott’s design work, finding a dynamic balance between similar and opposing materials to express how they are complimentary and interdependent at the same time. 

During high school, he took an elective in ceramics, becoming immediately fascinated by manipulating clay and its response to touch. He earned a B.A. in Political Theory at Michigan State University, and later returned to art, attaining his B.F.A. from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. An interdisciplinary program at C.C.S. allowed Scott to study the studio arts of Ceramics, Glass, Metal, and Wood while focusing on functional sculpture and furniture. After moving to New York, he worked at the boutique furniture showroom Chista and gained experience over the next six years working with interior designers and making custom sculptural furniture. His tenure at CHISTA included the development of large scale cast bronze furniture and custom handmade rugs. 

After a few years of nights and weekends in the studio, Scott launched his own studio practice, Scott Daniel Design, in 2010 in tandem with his experiments to create Cmesh. Strickstein has now been working with ceramics for 30 years, his current collections include table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, occasional tables, and wall installations. The evolution of the studio practice has led to a focus on large scale sculptural lighting and furniture for private residential projects and luxe hospitality.
