J.Margulis
Jose Margulis (Caracas, 1970) began his artistic career in photography while studying Management in Venezuela. Initially working in a family-run digital printing business, he later transitioned into sculpture, blending his skills to create art that merges two and three-dimensional planes.
His work in 3D sculptures and colourful acrylic compositions often leads to photographic documentation, creating a dialogue between the photograph and the sculpture. Influenced by Venezuelan Geometric abstractionism and Kinetic art, Margulis was particularly inspired by Jesús Soto and Naum Gabo's exploration of volume and space.
He uses abstraction to playfully construct space with minimal materials, creating colourful sculpted elements that serve as models for his photographic work. This interplay between mediums forms a continuous loop of visual discourse.
Margulis' art focuses on geometric shapes, altering viewer perspectives to convey the philosophical notion that life has multiple narratives and perceptions. His use of bright, contrasting colours is influenced by his time in Mexico and Venezuela's tropical landscapes. He incorporates light, translucency, curved shapes, and volumetric geometries to create layered compositions that challenge our perception of reality.
Margulis' practice is a nuanced blend of sculpture and photography, exploring the complex interaction of human experiences and societal paths. Through his art, he seeks to continually challenge and enrich viewers' perceptions of life.
