Beau Dunn
Beau Dunn is a Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist who delves into consumerism, materialism, globalized identities, and gender roles through her conceptually charged mixed-media works.
Her art spans sculpture, painting, and photography, often using iconic and sometimes controversial products to create lively-coloured pieces that provide playful yet honest social commentary on consumer culture. With imagery from Barbie Dolls, Hello Kitty, board games, Trojan condom packages, and vibrant neon signs, Dunn exposes the stereotypes and agendas underlying contemporary society's simulacrum.
A Fine Art graduate from Pepperdine University, Dunn's artistic journey began with a desire to question the consumption of visual messaging across beauty, fashion, and advertising industries, areas in which she possesses firsthand experience. Over the past decade, she has developed a cohesive body of work produced in series, each exploring variations of broad themes using traditional mediums, found materials, and innovative production processes.
Dunn's versatile oeuvre often addresses gender stereotypes through creative interpretations of varied products associated with masculinity and femininity. Her projects featuring Barbie dolls, for instance, range from sculptural arrangements and furniture pieces to close-up photographs addressing Western beauty standards and diversity. Conversely, her brightly coloured plastic sculptures of Trojan condom packages, altered with ironic phrases, highlight the silent pressures men face regarding sexual stamina and performance. Dunn’s work encourages viewers to draw their own conclusions about the biases and expectations these objects embody.
Further emphasizing her conceptual approach, Dunn incorporates the power of words in her art. Her ongoing series, Next Generation, features vibrant neon works with witty variations of the phrase "Need money for...," reflecting the monetization of various aspects of life. This series also highlights the impermanent nature of luxury, as seen in her pandemic-era sign "Need Money for Toilet Paper" instead of "Need Money for a Birkin." Dunn's unique perspective, dark sense of humour, and deep understanding of beauty, fashion, and entertainment industry codes ensure her practice remains unlabelled and distinctively insightful.
Beau Dunn (b. 1987, Los Angeles, CA) holds a BFA in sculpture from Pepperdine University. Her work is part of significant private collections and has been exhibited both domestically and internationally, including in London, UK, and Gstaad, Switzerland.
